When running ipv4 and ipv6 on a cisco switch is the command really necessary.

sdm prefer dual-ipv4-and-ipv6 default

I did not run the command on a 3750 switch and enabled ipv6 did not have any issues.

The command is also not working on a 2960 and 3550.

Please advice.

No.  That's the default template.

On the 2960 with LAN Lite image, the template is not configurable. IIRC, the 3550 doesn't support this feature.
