sign in - sign out

At the receptionists desk on the 2 floors of our building we have this really high tech way of signing in and out when you leave for an appointment or for lunch.  Now I know there are software programs that can do this from each computer and each employee can see who is there or not but that is not what I'm talking about.  I want something I can put onto a touch screen tablet/laptop that has win 8 on it.  Any ideas for software that would do that?  Free would be great.

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Doesn't your windows 8 have touch screen?
As you simply said>we have this really high tech way of signing in and out when you leave for an appointment or for lunch. << how is this done currently?
As you would need to incorporate the touch screen from a computer running windows 8? with this current process.
I have to imagine how your clients enter the office and log in /out currently.
Please explain.
Thanks

Unless I'm understanding you wrong but in your answer you have given iOS apps that would work.  This is a windows 8 machine with a touch screen.   iOS apps won't work on it.  It would need to be an iPad.  Am I not understanding your response?
