Need a onscreen filter for external content list for Sharepoint 2013

I have a sharepoint 2013 site that I have been able to configure with an external list (SQL function) that has two optional parameters, if the parameters are not issued then it returns no results.  I can manually change the view to enter the search criteria but I want something a little more user friendly where the user enters one of the two criteria and sees the results.  It took me a while to get to this point I just cant get through the last part

This is a 2010 tequnique but I can't see why it wouldn't work in 2013.  However I suspect there might be easier methods of doing this in 2013, but I include it as it is a nice full walkthrough:

Its a solution which is more than I got from anyone else, and while it should be easier in design2013 its just a mess as they have stripped spd13
