Wordpres - Pages under index give 404 file not found when permalinks are set to post name

All the pages except index get a 404. This is because I have said to use permalinks that are based on the name of the post. How do I fix this? If I go back to the default permalinks it works fine but I get ugly links and it may or may not mess with search engine optimization.

Also URLs based on date+postname only show the post name.

Check your .htaccess file to see if the WordPress rewrite rules are present when you set the Permalinks.

Post the contents of the .htaccess file and also let us know what other plugins are installed.

Apparently it was htaccess and it's fixed now. Thanks Jason! I'm new to wordpress so I'm sure I'll have a bunch of easy 500 pointers. LoL
