Yes, you should have exported the legacyExchangeDNs from the contacts and added them as X500 addresses on the new mailboxes.<br />

If your forest functional level is at 2008 R2 or above, you can enable the AD recycling bin (<a href="http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd392261%28v=ws.10%29.aspx" rel="ugc">http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd392261%28v=ws.10%29.aspx</a>), otherwise, you would need to perform an authoritative restore of AD to get the objects back.<br />
