I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Intel Core Solo and Core Duo processors are 32-bit and consequently Macs with these processors only are capable of booting in 32-bit mode. Intel Core 2 Duo and Xeon processors are 64-bit. You need a 64 bit processor to run Mavericks.

The oldest Mac Pro to run Mavericks is the 3,1.

In order to run Mavericks, Macs have to have both a 64-bit Intel processor and a 64-bit implementation of the EFI firmware that controls the Mac's motherboard.
