Generation of OAB Failed. The RPC server is unavailable

Hi all,

This was working previously, however for the last 2 weeks The Exchange Mailbox 2013 server is reporting an "Generation of OAB Failed. The RPC server is unavailable error" when trying to update the OAB. The environment consists of the Following:-
Site 1
1 Riverbed Load Balancer
2 x Windows 2012 R2 Exchange 2013 CAS servers
4 x Windows 2012 R2 Exchange 2013 Mailbox servers in a DAG
Site 2
1 Riverbed Load Balancer
2 x Windows 2012 R2 Exchange 2013 CAS servers
4 x Windows 2012 R2 Exchange 2013 Mailbox servers in a DAG

If I manually try to update the OAB using the "Update-OfflineAddressBook" command I get a 17004 error. If you can assist that would be appreciated.

You have not posted the complete error but have you checked the below link which suggests to cleanup OAB entries from your configuration partition?

Hi Rajitha,
I did see that blog and have already double checked ADSIEDIT however there were no entries with "0ACNF" in them. ADSIEEDIT looked clean. Today I created an new arbitation mailbox and enabled OABGen for that user and created a new offlineAddressBook onto a different Mailbox Database on a Different DAG member. However, when I updated the new OAB it also failed with the same error.

If you need the actual application error log entry it is: -

       Generation of OAB "\Default Offline Address Book (Ex2013)" failed.

I've logged this with Microsoft support. No resolution yet however the issue appears to be domain controller specific. If I move the System Mailbox for OAB to another Exchange DAG member, OAB generation works
