we have quite a few ssrs subscriptions set up

I know it is possible to check the status of the subscription manually but

Is there any way to set up some type of automated process to send an email if a subscription fails?

Have a look at this article: http://www.sqldataplatform.com/Blog/Post/14/How-to-Track-SSRS-Subscription-Failures

Of course, it won't let you know if an SSRS subscription fails because the SQL Server Agent is not running, because it relies on the Agent!
