connecting mysql to mssql 2012

trying to connect from SSMS for MS SQL 2012 to MySQL 5.521
in order to run a stored procedure to pull data from MySQL and process it in SQL 2012

i believe i need a linked server.
to get a linked server i believe i need an ODBC connection.

i am running windows 7 professional 64 bit

when creating the linked server, not sure what to put into the provider string or location...   catalog i am assuming is the database i want to connect tol

Yes, you need to set a linked server using ODBC but don't forget that you need to install the MySQL client in the SQL Server machine so it can has the necessary driver.

Connection using old (pre-4.1.1) authentication protocol refudsed (client option 'secure_auth' enabled).

Which version of MySQL are you connecting to? The driver and the MySQL server should has the same versions.

5.3 is the highest version of the odbc driver i could find.

initial queston has version of mysql in it..   5.521

Yes, MySQL 5.3.4 connector for ODBC.
Looks to me that the error that you are getting now it's a bug. Check this thread in MySQL blog.
