Yes, you need to set a linked server using ODBC but don't forget that you need to install the MySQL client in the SQL Server machine so it can has the necessary driver.
Here's a step by step on how to do it.

when trying to connect the ODBC i get

Connection using old (pre-4.1.1) authentication protocol refudsed (client option 'secure_auth' enabled).

i am using mySQL connector/ODBC v 5.3
Which version of MySQL are you connecting to? The driver and the MySQL server should has the same versions.
5.3 is the highest version of the odbc driver i could find.

initial queston has version of mysql in it..   5.521
