I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

I don't know what you mean by summary of main differences of all components. Do you want main differences, or all differences?

Important things for me are read-only domain controllers and fine grained password policies. They came about in Windows 2008, though fine grained password policies didn't get an official Microsoft UI until Windows 2012. The AD recycle bin in a nice feature. Changing SYSVOL replication to DFS-R is nice, but probably not that significant unless you are replicating a lot. These are the changes to AD that have made the biggest difference for me. What items are important for you?
For a reasonably complete table of changes/improvements to AD over the versions from 2003 through 2012 R2, see
