Windows 2012 SMTP Server

How would I go about setting up a Windows 2012 SMTP server. Once this is setup we will allow the server to relay internal through the exchange Hub Transport server, for sending emails from an application running on the SMTP server or can this be setup so that instead of relaying through exchange the SMTP server can send the email internally. We have an app running and the server relays the tickets (emails) and it backs up the exchange queues, so we are tying to lighten the load and let the app server which is going to all be the smtp server perform alot of the work. Hopefully this makes sense and can anyone offer a suggestion.

If i get you correctly, you want to relay email from application thru Windows SMTP server not Exchange since the email will increase the email queue on Exchange. If that the case you may refer to below links:

On your ticketing application, configure it SMTP configuration to point to WIndows SMTP server.
