Integration with ZenDesk

I am very new to ZenDesk so I hope my question makes sense.

Is the following possible and if it is what would be the recommended methodology:
1)  From ZenDesk, call out to another system that has available web services (REST or SOAP)
2)  From a embedded link within ZenDesk, pop-up a window from an external UI, work in that UI, then push data back into ZenDesk
3)  Push data from an external system into a ZenDesk ticket

Zendesk has been working on import / export for a couple years.
This may be of value to you.

They have developed the tool that automatically migrates records into Zendesk. It can import your ticket. The tool imports through Ticket Import API, so there's no need to export data to CSV first.
