macbook air connecting a mini vga cable

Hello I have a mac book air and I got a mini display cable that hooks to the thunderbolt connection but I can't get the video to come up on the monitor .... is there any key command that I should be using to get it to display on the monitor ?

now it just started working but it extended the screen.... I want to be able to use the monitor as the main screen but I dont see any setting to do this

To use it as the main screen go to System Preferences and Display settings. On the primary monitor choose the Arrangement tab. From there you can drag the white bar, that represents the find menu, at the top of the current primary monitor to the monitor you want to use as the primary.
