Here is a list of files which make up a VM to get you started

http://pubs.vmware.com/workstation-10/index.jsp?topic=%2Fcom.vmware.ws.using.doc%2FGUID-A968EF50-BA25-450A-9D1F-F8A9DEE640E7.html

https://www.vmware.com/support/ws5/doc/ws_learning_files_in_a_vm.html

When creating a CLONE, the files are the same, but the name would change, but extensions would remain the same. the clone name would be what you have called the clone.

An example VM which is off with snapshots
