Your calendar event is relying on an item which has already been deleted and therefore it cant find the item. If you have the backup then just try to retrieve that item and recreate it. Then you should be able to delete the calendar event. You can also check SharePoint logs with the correlation ID which could narrate what that item was.

Thank you for the information.  we don't have a backup which goes back that far (the problem is at least 6 months ago but he end user only recently notified us).  I will look at the sharepoint logs and see if there is any pertinent information.  thank you for your time and input.

Hello again,  I don't seem to be able to find any events in sharepoint.  perhaps I am not looking in the right place? I did setup a custom view in eventviewer and though the error comes up in sharepoint calendar, it does not log it in the event viewer.

Review SharePoint ULS logs. Reproduce the issue again and note the correlation id.Go to C:\program files\common files\Microsoft shared\web server extensions\14\logs. Check the recent file and search for this correlation id. If it doesn't occur wait for few min and check again.
If it doesn't come then enable verbose logging through central admin and check again in the logs

So sorry for such a delayed response.  The organization decided to just scrap the whole server and build a new one for many reasons (unrelated to SharePoint).  This of course has an ancillary benefit of resolving the SharePoint issue.  Thank you for your direction.
