The case of the missing Virtual Machine.

One of our cats walked on the Mac Mini keyboard, which is quite unusual - but a ‘cat’-astrophe, as selecting the Parallels 10 / Windows 8.1 Virtual Machine icon returns the following:

The "Windows 8.1" application cannot be started.
The application is installed in a virtual machine that cannot be located. Make sure that the virtual machine hasn't been deleted or moved to another location.

To further add to the difficulties, Finder now includes a ‘topquark-2’  Network device which cannot be deleted - TopQuark is (was?) the host machine for the Windows 8.1.pvm virtual machine.

A search returns two instances of Windows 8.1.pvm.

>> Macintosh HD ▸ Users ▸ JAMAROSX ▸ Documents ▸ Snagit ▸ Parallels

>> Acronis 2015 TopQuark Backup

If not the correct folders - Where should the VM be?

Have you looked in the trash?

Restoring from recent Acronis backup does not help. The "Windows 8.1" application cannot be started" message is returned.

Found 'Windows 8.1' 51 byte alias in trash.

Found 'Windows.aco' [3 KB with Parallels icon] in trash which was OSX located in:

Macintosh HD ▸ Applications ▸ Adobe Photoshop Elements 13 ▸ Support Files ▸ Presets ▸ color swatches

Where should this file be?

If you right click on a file in the trash it should give you the option to "put back".

I found and downloaded the Parallels 10 User guide and discovered where the VM is stored [../Documents/Parallels]. Having located the 'missing' VM (as above) I was able to move/restart OSX/Parallels/Win 8.  All is well.
