now I was able to add the static ip but when I plug my laptop onto it, I can't access the internet.  it received an ip from the router's dhcp but I can't access the internet.  do I need to create a nat?  I read something that latest versions of asa ios come in blank hence new nat needed? anyone?

yes.  are you running 8.2 or earlier or are you running 8.3 or later?

the nat syntax differs between 8.2 and 8.3.

this presumes that your local subnet is 192.168.1.0/24 (inside interface) and your public IP is 172.16.2.2 (outside interface):

object network INSIDE
 subnet 192.168.1.0 255.255.255.0

object-group network OUTSIDE
 network-object host 172.16.2.2

nat (inside,outside) dynamic OUTSIDE
 object network INSIDE
