I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

the companies may not even remove the warranty when using 3rd party inks - so go for it!

I've purchased toners for companies for many years now and can NEVER justify spending more for name brand HP / Dell / etc ink.

However, I will warn you, the aftermarket industry varies GREATLY. You will find some aftermarket companies who do great toners for a bit more of the cost (Rhinotek) and you will find some terrible ones (can't even remember them anymore because I stop doing business with them!) but it is generally always better to spend the extra $5 to save yourself from headache like toner spills, cheap drum, etc. You can tell they care if they back their stuff with tech support and include free cleaning kits like what Rhinotek does.

I am in NO way in partnership with Rhinotek other than they get to eat my company's money every quarter. However, they are worth every penny compared to if we were to buy everything HP branded.

With a color printer there is a difference in tones when printing photos, which would bother a photo enthusiast.
With a Monochrome printer there may be a slight difference in the darkness which can easily be adjusted.

"do you see any value in going for name brand?"
No, not with a Monochrome printer.
If you stick to well known aftermarket companies you will have good results and save heaps.

Also note from your second link, it states:
