sharepoint and onedrive lose connection

We have an office 365 E1 subscription.  We utilize sharepoint and onedrive on each computer.  Periodically, there is a red X on the sharepoint or onedrive connection and the I have to break the connection and then re-establish the connection all over again.  Sometimes only certain files have a red X and the rest have a green check mark.

Why does this happen and what can I do to prevent this from happening?

We have a Windows domain environment.  Most computers use Office 2013.

This is kinda "by design". Authentication to SharePoint Online/OneDrive requires a small cookie/token to be stored on the client side, which expires every 8 hours or so. To renew the token, you simply need to login to SPO/ODFB with the browser. A good strategy is for example to set SPO as start page in IE. Below are some articles that give you more details on this. If you have AD FS in place, its strongly recommended to configure 'smart links' and use persistent cookies, which will allow you to work around this issue (the last article).
