I have a client that has just purchased a company. They have a Server 2012 Essentials and is linked to Office 365 for email.
They want to change the domain name from oldcompanyname.com (and associated oldcompanyname.local, and remote.oldcompanyname.com for RDP) to newcompanyname.com (and remote.newcompanyname.com for RDP). They want to change email from using @oldcompanyname.com to @newcompanyname.com)

So, can we change the Server 2012 domain name to the new .newcompanyname.com? If so, how?

I have seen people that say you can do it, and others that say not to do it.

You cannot change the active directory domain name. You can change the external URL fore remote web access. Simply rerun the config wizards. For Office 365, you'll have to disable integration. Make your changes in the O365 dashboard, and then enable integration as though it were new. There is no elegant way to really handle that step.
