Try Microsoft Windows Update troubleshooter and reset update components.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/971058

Then try Windows Update Readiness Tool.

See if this assists.

I have had luck resolving errors with the WSUS console by repairing dotnet.

Start > Control Panel
Programs and Features or Add/Remove Programs
For each instance of MS .NET FRAMEWORK click on CHANGE > REPAIR
Allow the repair process to run and complete
Try WSUS console again

John & Chad many thanks for your prompt responses!

I tried your suggestions & whilst these didn't directly help to resolve the problem, nevertheless useful tools for other issues.

In the end, I went through various web updates & after several hundreds of updates the problem disappeared. it's all working now.
