sbs2008 : windows could not search for new updates : error 800B001

On a SBS2008 SP2 getting 'windows could not search for new updates ' error code 800B001.

On opening WSUS console, getting 'Error: Connection Error' : Reset Server Node option does not fix.

The following test from the error copied to clipboard:

The WSUS administration console was unable to connect to the WSUS Server via the remote API.

Verify that the Update Services service, IIS and SQL are running on the server. If the

problem persists, try restarting IIS, SQL, and the Update Services Service.

I tried your suggestions & whilst these didn't directly help to resolve the problem, nevertheless useful tools for other issues.

 In the end, I went through various 'check online for windows updates' & after several hundreds of updates the problem disappeared. it's all working now.
