Why am I asked for a password when trying to merge many PDF files with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro but not when I open the same file with Adobe Reader?

Why am I asked for a password when trying to merge several PDF files with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro but not when I open the same file with Adobe Reader?

And I have never registered any password for this PDF file (and all the other PDF files that can not be opened with Adobe Acrobat XI Pro).

I just purchased Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, and so far during the first days it has not been any problems at all. Then suddenly this: I am prompted to enter a password for a PDF file (a bank statement from one of my bank accounts) but there is no password and I have never ever before been prompted to do this. Why now?

I use Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

This is the exact text in the Window that pops up:

"'xxx.pdf' is protected. Please enter a Permissions Password."

Now when I just right-clicked the same PDF file I was prompted to enter a password for when I tried to merge many PDF files I am not prompted to enter any password. (I right-clicked now in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro, and now it worked fine when I only opened 1 PDF file and didn't try to merge several).

I can see the pattern now: For the bank statements for 2 other bank accounts that there is no problems with at all, these bank statements have been downloaded as PDFs. Whereas for the bank statements for the 1st bank (that there are no openable PDFs at all), I was logged in to my online bank account and downloaded some bank statements and printed some directly in Adobe Acrobat XI Pro. (I downloaded only some because there has been some error on this online bank so all bank statements were not available for download, so for these periods I had to print the bank statements directly from my bank account to Adobe Acrobat XI Pro).

Very peculiar: The second time I did exactly the same procedure, and I received exactly the same popup window prompting me for a password (whereupon I clicked "Cancel" for each prompting me for a password), this time the files still got merged and added to the whole big PDF. So now these PDFs were added even though I never entered any password for them.

And all PDF bank statements were actually merged now this 2nd time I tried: both the PDFs I downloaded directly from my online bank account and the PDFs I created myself while logged in and chose "Convert webpage to Adobe PDF". (Because for some months the PDFs were not possible to download, so for these months I had to use "Convert webpage to Adobe PDF").

What could be the cause for this happening?
Also, I have the window in Adobe opened now where the PDFs are merged, and it says:

"One or more of your files contains security settings. To retain the security settings in these files, go to Settings and choose the PDF Portfolio option."

What should I do? Would it work if I disregard retaining the security settings and choose "Combine files" now? Will these problem PDFs also be added?

Wrong of me: the problem PDFs (only the ones I downloaded from the online bank in ready PDF-format, not the ones I create myself in Adobe) are visible when I have the view Do you want to combine these files (when I see all miniatures). When I choose to combine I get prompted a second time for the password for each of these problem PDFs.

And when finished combining the problem PDFs are not included.

I think it's the bank that somehow has problems with this function, because I can only download for months July to November 2013, then I have to create PDFs myself for months April to June 2013 and January to June 2014 by printing out the screen directly to Adobe. This second method works, but not to download (download, it's for those PDF files I am prompted for a password).
You need to ask the Bank how to fix this. Once the security is applied by the Bank, you cannot change it after downloading (normally).
I called the bank 2 hours ago, but they said it must be wrong on my computer (!). I've complained about this several times to them, and one at the back office once said there is something wrong on this function at their website, so they have to send these bank statements to me by regular post. I tried when I called them 2 hours ago to have them e-mail to me, but they refused, said they could only send by regular mail. Then they did this, but it was lost in the post, I never received anything. They said I could use print screen, and OK it seems the only solution now.

I chose the printout method now, although I'm not completely happy with the result as the PDFs contain less information than the regular downloaded PDF bank statements. But there is no alternative, I have to submit these bank statements as soon as possible to my accountant.
