Installing Fibre HBA card with vmware

Hi All,

Ive just installed some HP HBA fibre cards in my DL380 servers. I need to configure them in VMware but its not something Ive done before. I have noticed that the fibre card, although installed, does not show any light at all. Is there something I need to do on the server itself before concerning myself with Vmware?

There is very little configuration that needs to be done, other than inserting the device in the Server, checking the firmware is up to date, and compatible with your FC SAN (check with SAN Vendor).

Also check that the FC HBA is compatible with VMware ESXi, by looking at the HCL

Check the VMware Hardware Compatability Lists HCL here

The VMware Hardware Compatibility List is the detailed lists showing actual vendor devices that are either physically tested or are similar to the devices tested by VMware or VMware partners. Items on the list are tested with VMware products and are known to operate correctly.Devices which are not on the list may function, but will not be supported by VMware.

All configuration of FC cards, is usually done via the FC HBA Storage BIOS, or via a CDROM utility supplied by the FC HBA vendor.

As for the light, this may depend on whether you have fibre connected and connected to your SAN Fabric (FC switches), often you would have two cards, for  resilience, and two storage paths to your SAN.

Make a note of the WWNN in VMware vSphere because you will needs these to input into your ACLs on your SAN Fabric and SAN. (when mapping LUNs!)

I cannot see anything under the adapters within VMware. They are compatible. Will vmware need drivers or any config?

When you say the "ia the FC HBA Storage BIOS" do you mean the BIOS of the server?

Thanks

You do not see *ANY* FC HBA in Host > Configuration > Storage Adapters ?

You will

1. need to check the FC HBA is on the HCL
2. if on the HCL, you will need to install a driver.

No configuration, but you will need drivers, and you should see the storage adapter listed with it;s WWNN.

At POST, when the server BOOTS, in will be in the FC HBA BIOS (if applicable!).

What make and model is your fiber card? When to powered on the server did you see a prompt to enter a bios screen for the hba?

Can you supply me with the model ?

you download the VIB (driver) from the vendor and install it, on the console, but ESXi has most FC drivers in the OS, it's unusual to not have it recgonise your HBA, unless not certified for use.

Yes, it's on the HCL.

the link above is to the driver.

Download the driver, upload it to ESXi host, and then run

esxcli software vib install -v {VIBFILE}

or

esxcli software vib install -d {OFFLINE_BUNDLE}
