Use Webmaster Tool - without Google Indexing website

Hi,

We are launching a new website, and would like to use Google Webmaster Tools, for such things as speed testing, mobile accessibility etc, but don't want the site to be listed in Googles search results (until we are ready to launch)

How would I go about doing this  - would <meta name="robots" content="noindex"> on every page worK ??

Don't use the meta tags for this.  Instead use a robots.txt file in your site root folder.  Inside of the file, use this directive:

User-agent: *
Disallow: /

Open in new window


That should prevent any spiders from indexing your site. When ready, simply change Disallow to Allow to let them in.

Hi - yes I understand that you can disallow in the robots.txt file - but would that not stop google crawling totally and thereby make it impossible to use Google Webmaster Tools? - The question is related to how to use GWT but NOT get into the search index.

Webmaster tools won't be affected by robots.txt (technically, you are asking about PageSpeed Insights), it will just keep you out of the index.  So things like index placement, index speed, etc. will not work, but the rest of the suite will.
