We are having problems sending mail from SQL Server Database Mail.

The error written in the SQL log is:

"The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2015-01-14T11:06:06). Exception Message: Cannot send mails to mail server. (The SMTP server requires a secure connection or the client was not authenticated. The server response was: 5.7.1 Client was not authenticated)."

Could I set up a relay to make this work? If so how?

Generally speaking: Yes. But without knowing the cause of your problem: No.

Your error code points to Exchange as MTA. Thus check what kind of authentication it needs and what you have setup in SQL Server. Check your account configuration:

Yup, we cannot do much about a invalid certificate used in your environment..
