Advantages of using what exactly? Of XERI? Well, if you're in the business of handling many documents (law firms, ministeries, etc.), it is the easiest way to share and maintain documents. You could see it as a thoroughly integrated Intranet server, with all document facilities: create, update, delete, share, forward, approval cycles, etc. plus the advantages of IBM Notes/Domino (security, authentication, reliability, and many more)

XERI is a document management system, see https://greenhouse.lotus.com/plugins/plugincatalog.nsf/assetDetails.xsp?action=editDocument&documentId=77B312CB20114B7B852576E8002387F5

If your company uses XERI for handling forms, the mail, memos etc., then I suppose you could say it's required.

Why your question?

I'm new and I see a stand alone server running it as it's not recommended to run on the Lotus server.
We are planning to upgrade Lotus and I'm trying to determine what specifically the advantages of using it are.

I found that document, but can you elaborate as far as what kind of handling?
