How can I customize a sharepoint 2013 external list

I created an external list to sql data in sharepoint 2013. All the data is fine but I need to customize the list (change the datetime to date only, lengthen some of the columns etc.) SharePoint designed 2013 no longer has design view I do not know how to edit in code. Can someone tell em how to accomplish this? Either point me to an article or a 3rd part tool that will allow design view in sharepoint designer 2013? I can also change the table in sql if that makes it work better.

Thanks

Sharepoint designer 2013 is the problem. There is no more design mode and you have to use code to change everything
