setup a Windows 2012 R2 IIS SMTP relay Server to relay emails to and from exchange 2013

We've setup a Windows 2012 R2 server  as a SMTP relay server ( which is a spam Filter server )to get the emails first and then forward all emails over to our Exchange 2013 server. Our Exchange 2013 setup consists of a Mailbox and CAS server role. We have emails successfully going out, but the problem is we are not getting emails in. The emails don't appear in the "badmail" or "pickup" folders on the SMTP relay server. Please tell us what are we missing, thanks.

that is right send will work But receive will not work.

you need MX record for that...Better is go with EDGE server your problem will sort there.

We already have a MX record at our Public  internet domain registrar and web hosting company.

You need to configure the server with remote domains, then set it up to allowing relaying to those domains and then set the domains to use a smart host - the smart host being your internal Exchange server.

Hopefully the software you are using on top can do recipient validation, if not then you are setting yourself up for backscatter blacklisting.

Problems using Powershell and Active Directory?

Managing Active Directory does not always have to be complicated.  If you are spending more time trying instead of doing, then it's time to look at something else. For nearly 20 years, AD admins around the world have used one tool for day-to-day AD management: Hyena. Discover why

Thank you for the post. We did configure remote domains on the Windows 2012 SMTP server and added the smart host(within the [ ] )IP address of our internal Exchange 2013 server.

Do we make the relay within the receiver connector on the CAS or the Mailbox server or both to allow the SMTP server to forward the emails?

The relay setting is on the IIS server, nothing to do with Exchange.

We have narrowed it down to the firewall. We can telnet from the windows 2012 SMTP relay server on port 25 to the internal exchange 2013 server. We can telnet to the Exchange 2013 server on port 25, and we connect to the SMTP relay server and send an email which gets to a mailbox on the exchange server. The problem is when we try to perform a telnet on port 25 from outside to the public MX record or public mail IP address, then the telnet fails. It seems like the firewall isn't passing the traffic thru. We have port 25 open and pointed to the SMTP relay server instead of the Exchange 2013 server. If we point the traffic back to the Exchange 2013 server then it works. We can send out fine from the Exchange 2013 server thru to the SMTP relay server out.

We ended up installing the GFI email filter on the Exchange 2013 Mailbox server.

We could not get the SMTP relay server to work with relaying emails over to the exchange 2013, so we just installed the GFI ME 2015 unto the Exchange 2013 server.
