How do I create a retention policy tag in exchange online that moves only email items to the in-place archive? I do not want to touch calendar, contacts, notes, etc.? I want to be able to apply this to all mailboxes with no user interaction.

thank you

"With the exception of a default policy tag (DPT) for voicemail, Exchange doesn't support retention tags for different message types. Only tags with a MessageClass of * are supported, and they apply to all message types."

So nothing you can do with the actual tags/policies. But you can use Inbox rules to apply different tags based on item type. Or you can use an EWS based script and run it periodically against mailboxes.

You mean Inbox rules in Outlook? I need to do this completely from the back-end. No user interaction. It seems incredible to me that I can't create a policy or rule in Exchange to automatically move email to the archive based on age.

thank you for the help though. Appreciate it.

You can move email, but you cannot distinguish between message, appointment, contact, etc. All items will be treated the same.
