Posting files with Jquery AJAX

I am using

		$.ajax({
						type: "POST",
						dataType: 'json',
						contentType:attr("enctype", "multipart/form-data"),
						url: "index.php",
						data: $(form).serialize(),
						success: function(response) {

I read somewhere that not all browsers will serialize file input fields, please advise
