I have an old Windows 2008 32-bit server that is acting as a domain controller and also has a couple of shares on it (called N1). I would like to migrate the shares/data to a new 2012R2 server (called N2). we have a lot of users who have the shares on N1 mapped. I can copy all the data with robocopy and duplicate the share names/security. What is the easiest way for the users to still be able to access their data/share? Could I rename N1 and then rename N2 to N1? The fact that N1 is a domain controller concerns me with that. Do I need to demote it first? Will Active Directory remember that "N1" was already used and complain if I try to rename N2 to "N1"? Any suggestions as to the best way not to disrupt user access would be appreciated.
