How to Open Lotus Notes:// links in web browser

I have a need to convert Lotus Notes Document Links (NDL) to Notes:// protocol to open documents and views.  The Notes:// works fine in the Outlook client but fail to launch the Lotus Notes client from a web browser with the same default file associations in Control Panel Default Programs.  Any ideas?

It turns out that Outlook Web App in Office365 doesn't open the Notes:// links due to security.  However, the Outlook 2013 client will open them.   The Outlook Web App will open NDLs.  Also, if you cut/paste the Notes:// URL in the browser the document will open...
