Computer sows down to a halt.

I am running Ubuntu 14.10 on a desktop computer. Right after re-boot, the computer performs very nicely. However, after a while using it, it starts to slow down because of background activity. Actually it slows down so badly that I can't use the machine. If I wait (sometimes up to 5 minutes) the background activity stops and the computer goes back to normal (very acceptable speed). Any suggestions as of the cause of this and how to fix it?

Can you post output of "dmesg", preferably after slowness ended?
Which kernel (uname -r)
Any special drivers installed?
Which desktop - unity? kde? lxde?
I cannot believe it becomes slow. I have 1GB 1Ghz HTPC that runs for months without any slowdown.

What are the hardware specs? Have you considered a better OS than Ubuntu? Ubuntu with it's unity desktop is very resource hungry, and it is very demanding on your video card.

Personally I'd recommend Makulu Linux. There is an XFCE 7 version which is based on ubuntu, but performs much better. It still has a very nice desktop with lots of "eye candy". It beats ubuntu by lengths. Also the other versions based on Debian are very fast and nice.

Could not get dmesg after slowdown since computer is still working OK. I will do it when it happens. Maybe you can tell problem from the below dmesg done now.

I don't know. I will have to unplug them and then wait for behaviour.

And post full dmesg. yoose is cut at top. We could see what PC you have there...

I am positive that the slowdown is due to a background program that is running (I can hear the HDD working hard) and when that stops (background program) the computer comes back to its normal speed. The problem is that I can't figure out which background program that is so I can disable it. I am posting below the dmesg after the slowdown. Maybe you can figure out which program this is.

I don't understand what you are trying to tell me about the code option. Any instructions posted relating this matter?

When you are posting a comment or Question, just above your text entry box you have a line with some symbols, like "B" or "I" for Bold or Italic text. In that line you also have
"Code"

. If you click on that your cursor is put between the code delimiters, and then when you paste your linux outputs into that location, and you submit the Comment, your code will be put into a nice box.

And please post the specs of your PC, like which CPU, how much RAM, what video card is used.

Dear Erwin: rindi as a volunteer helper asks you to format your messages correctly so posts fit in a single screen.

Can I ask you again to capture FULL dmesg output and identify your hardware and your desktop environment?
Different desktop environments schedule different file indexers, but we can help getting rid of them if you like.

So:
dmesg > dmesg.txt

now upload that file with your next post.

You have TV card plugged in but Linux kernel says it is not supported without much tweaking - can you PLEASE leave that out of your system? And preferably the 3 USB flash drives too.

That isn't the newest and greatest hardware. I think with that and Ubuntu you can expect that type of performance. I'm sure if you were going to use another distro that would be better.

your dmesg starts 25 seconds after your system boots, it is completely useless.

945G is very poor video card. It just does not chew 3D desktops in linux nor Windows Vista+ Aero.
Lubuntu or mediabuntu is good choice for it though. Unity2d maybe too.

Load average 2.00 is a lot.
Will you be able to install and enable "psacct" and then check what is running for long and eating so much resources?

I used to run Windows 7 Ultimate on this old box for years. I thought Ubuntu would be the wunderkind that would make the system less noisy and a bit faster.  Ubuntu actually does all that. Just once in a while some background activity holds this thing to a halt. Isn't it possible to disable this activity. If I could, this computer would work quite nicely.

Any suggestions as of what another distro to use?

Ubuntu performs similarly to windows, and the newer versions only have Unity 3D which just need high performance video cards with OpenGL (3D). So in terms of performance Ubuntu is one of the worst choices when using Linux. Besides that the unity desktop is something that really isn't what most people want to use, as it is almost as terrible as the metro desktop of Windows 8.x...

In my first comment I suggested using Makulu Linux. That is fast and very good.

Check right side bar of http://distrowatch.com/ , I would not take challenge below  7-CentOS.
As German you might want to install SuSE with KDE from that livecd, or it is just my imagination that people trust local produce.
For ubuntu - medabuntu is fanciest desktop of low-resource ones, KDE has much better fallback than gnome or unity to run on low function video cards.

For noise - clean CPU fan... And meybe get some fanless nvidia or radeon hd that fits your computer.
