Sharepoint 2010 Site Collection Getting Locked Out.

SharePoint 2010 Environment. We are facing problem that the Sub sites are getting Locked out Frequently. We will unlock it and it will work fine for couple of days.
When lock happens ..checked the content database and its with ready status and no issue with content database. And the template is of having say 15 gb limit and warning at 10 gb and lock at 12 gb.But the site is only 8 gb.
Any help would be appreciated.

I have come across this problem with back up software that is SharePoint away and puts sites into a locked state whilst it backs up but on occasions fails to release those locks.

What backups do you use?

We are using HP Data protector for Farm backup and Symantec backup exec for Flat file system. Or is it SQL content database backup as its only happening to some site collection we have got couple of site collections. As you said it should be outside SharePoint as from SharePoint everything seems to be ok. I will check the backup schedule and will update you.
Any other possibilities?

Believe its Backup is the culprit. As our Hyper-v Virtual backups are facing same kind of Lock. After backup is finished with errors ,backup getting aborted but somehow will not release the lock on server side. Hyper-V cluster storage showing "Online Redirected Mode Backup in Progress"
Have escalated the case to Vendor.
Thanks for helping out
