I am first of all using bpmn to notate our business processes.
it seems that a uml activity diagram is very similar.

the bpmn doesn't incorporate a whole lot of actual software interaction diagramming.

does anyone have a recommended method for this?

we have one in-line business application that we are trying to diagram how it interacts with our business processes but I haven't found a standard way online of notating this.  suggestions?

One idea, search the E-E knowledge base for similar questions, I believe http://www.experts-exchange.com/Software/Office_Productivity/Productivity_Applications/Q_28194611.html may help.  Are you more focused upon method, or tool?

thanks dvz.... I am looking for both or either.

I am using visio and bpmn 2.0 for business processes.  I haven't found any method yet that shows you how to document application workflow.  I figure I could create something myself but would rather use some sort of standard and learn something useful.

My boss likes it when I learn something useful

Disclaimer, I had a Masters class on this but no work experience.  Since you mentioned Visio, I'll lead you toward compatible (and hopefully open source) tools.  Cnet has a listing that looked well rated, but I cannot download it at this time to check it out.

A simple search for videos shows some interesting prospects, which I can and will browse thru as time permits. https://www.google.com/search?q=how+to+document+application+workflow&sourceid=ie7&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&ie=&oe=&safe=active&gws_rd=ssl#q=how+to+document+application+workflow+visio&safe=active&rls=com.microsoft:en-US:IE-Address&tbm=vid

As you are aware, the manual approach used to be to start somewhere that data changes hands, then begin detailing backward and forward.  Dark ages indeed....
