Create Table of Contents from placed indesign docs

I have an Indesign file that contains my title page, table of contents and section pages. The content of each of the sections is contained in separate Indesign documents.

I am able to place these section indesign files but I want to be able to include their styled headings in the table of Contents.

If I just copied and pasted the text from these files into my top level indesign file it works, but we have multiple people working on each section so I just want to link to their portion and update the TOC as necessary.

Are you using the Book document format (File>New>Book) ?

I had not - am looking at this now.

Will the book allow me to the table of contents for the files I add?

Check out this file from Adobe. https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/creating-book-files.html It gives you the main features of the Book document.

And yes, when you combine the parts of the book the parts will be included in the TOC as long as the parts are using the same Paragraph Styles setup. And it is vital that every collaborator has the same master pages with coordinated styles. If not you will have to deal with the conflict when the chapters are joined back together.

Here is another file from Adobe, explaining the TOC and it mentions the Book format too: https://helpx.adobe.com/indesign/using/creating-table-contents.html
