Print spooler failing

A long history problem
This is a print server, 20 years old, all the printers 300+ have been migrated to new builds 2 or 3 times.  It currently is on a new build of 2008R2.  So this is a very sensitive server, and if we load the wrong driver, it will crash the print spooler and getting it back is a huge pain with much luck (Praise the Lord for snapshots).  Also, this weekend, it rebooted for patches, and now the spooler is stopping for that as well.  So
1) How can I determine why the spooler is stopping.  Specifically what event log #'s, or other logs can I view.  Or how do I turn up logging.
In a perfect world I am looking for something like answer.log,
loading xyz driver, success
loading cvf driver, success
loading ert driver, ...
Perhaps this is more a driver question??

2) How can I check for printers that have not been online for 360 days (or turn on logging so I can do this next year)
3) How can I connect the printer, with the port, with other reg keys, so I may clean them out.

Before it is suggested to start over, I cant, so please don't ask.

Check this out,I know HP can manage their own devices ,but they also say they can manage others.
The download is free and I've used the tool and it does work as a decent enterprise admin utility.

With that being said ,your mileage may vary.

What are the make and models of the printers?

HP has their own admin utility that does a decent job of reporting and driver installs.

I am not sure this is going to help me, as I am hesitant to install software on a delicate server that wants to crash every time I touch it.  It is a VM, so I may try some weekend though, ty.
