It seems to me that, relative to their size, Dot Net updates take much, MUCH longer to install than other Microsoft updates. My computer is currently installing a security update for Microsoft Dot Net 4, and I could have installed Microsoft Office Professional Plus twice by now.

Why do Dot Net framework updates take so long to install?

Updates to the .NET Framework 4 require a complete regeneration of the Native Image Cache, a very time-consuming operation.
