Hello,
To setup SharePoint, in terms of SQL, you can use the Windows Internal Database to install a database server locally on the SharePoint machine or setup an separate SQL server and point to it during SharePoint install.

The SQL server will need an account and a new database that the SharePoint setup can use to remotely access SQL server to setup the databases and tables.  So when it asks for the SQL server location, you would enter sqlservermachinename\sqldatabasename
and then it is accessed by the sql user account that was setup for sharepoint to user, such as sqlservermachinename\spuser or if on active directory, domain\spuser.

All other prerequisites are done prior to the setup with the Install Prerequisites in the setup wizard.
