download printer driver to non-domain laptop

Greetings,

I am able to see the domain-shared printers on our 2012 R2 print server on non-domain machines when going through the 'add printer' wizard. When I select one, it prompts to install the driver from already installed drivers on the laptop, rather than downloading it from the print server. I can choose the correct HP driver (HP Laserjet Enterprise 600 M601 602 603 PCL6), install the printer, and successfully print to it. Not all machines will have the driver already loaded on them.

How can I get it so that the non-domain machines can download the driver from the server? It may be too cumbersome for myself and others to go around and install the driver manually for these guests.

Thanks a lot for any help

If the server has the drivers installed for your version of the OS (including 32 vs 64 bit) then you can install them from the server, rather than using a local copy. Check that the drivers are on the server by going to Printer Properties > Sharing > Additional Drivers.

hdhondt - thanks for replying. however, the issue was that these were guests that had locked down laptops from there company so I wasn't able to install any software from any source. I ended up using a generic driver which allowed a connection to the printer and basic printing

Thanks, rpliner. Amazing how it's often something simple and seemingly unrelated that causes the problem!

hdhondt's solution may work but not in this case. My solution worked. I awarded points as it was the only reply and I appreciated that and the solution offered may have worked in another situation.
