Do not delete mailboxes and items until store has been backed up setting

We have an Exhange 2010 server and this setting is checked. Do we need to backup these databases using Windows Backup in order for it to delete anything, or will any backup software work?

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

This setting is referencing the hard deleted items like emails that are in the "Transport Dumpster" and Mailboxes that have been permanently deleted that are now in a "Disconnected State" database maintenance is run every day (unless modified) and it will cleanup expired items based on the settings that you have configured on each mailbox database (see screenshot below).

Typically when this option
Do not delete mailboxes and items until store has been backed up
is not checked when maintenance it will purge any items that are outside of the retention period for mail items and mailboxes. If you have this setting enabled (checked) you will need to perform a completed Full Backup which will then truncate the logs and new logs will start. At this point when maintenance is running it will purge mail items and mailboxes that have been backed up and they also need to be outside of the "Keep deleted items for x day" period.

Thank you. Can you clarify, will any backup program do, or is it keyed in on Windows Server Backup?

You can use backup software that is Exchange Aware which truncates the transaction logs. Backup Exec, NetBackup, Windows Server Backup etc can be used.
