lync server and office 365

We procured an office 365 subscription E1 and one of the options that we have is Microsoft Lync.  It seems like a good collaboration tool, but in order for it to work, do we need to purchase a Lync server?  Or is that built into Office 365 E1 already?

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

No server needed, you will use Lync as 'Software as a Service'. Much like you can use mail without having Exchange server, etc.

You didn't need Lync Server, When you Buy office 365 plan E1, it will provide you with Lync like mail of Exchange.
And Lync client, you will find it as office which exist in every user account and you can install it.

We already have an exchange server and our own domain controller. Can I still use it independent of those two other aspects mentioned?
