Website Building

Hello Sirs,

Thanks for your continuous co-operation all these days:)

I am about to start a Business. Related to e-commerce. I want to build a website for it. Something like people login and check for items add to cart, pay online and exit. My business not exactly the same but similar functionalities should be present.

I would request your guidance to build my website. But, I dont have any experiece in webite building or coding. I can understand the logic, but I am confused now how to to start it. I am ready to learn anything that is required.

Kindly help me understand how to start?
What is the best platform to choose?
What database software required?
How to create a website against online threats?

Like this there are somany questions in my mind? Please help me understand about this so that I can start my business this year.

Nowadays there were so many websites were built everyday and I am unaware of how they were actually created. It is like very depressing for me that I am unable to participate in this competetion. Kindly help me.

Thanks in advance for all your suggestions.

I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

Explain to us how you are qualified to start an e-commerce business without experience.
Specifically, how will you compete against existing e-commerce businesses that have the tecnical experience?

Well, Jim Horn already pointed the more obvious question so I'll point some others.
What is the best platform to choose? You'll find that there's no best platform. They are some and people will say the best one is the one that they are working with.
What database software required? You'll find that there's no best database platform. They are some and people will say the best one is the one that they are working with.
How to create a website against online threats? This one must be the one that will have common answers since security doesn't really depends on the product.

It is like very depressing for me that I am unable to participate in this competetion. Kindly help me.
Pointing you to Jim's comment again. And that's an help, believe it or not.

Venkat - Given your self-acknowledged lack of experience, my advice to you would be to contract with an experienced web developer.  Your first priority should be to get a functional site established soonest to begin revenue flow.  Develop your own technical capabilities afterward or in-parallel.   I would suggest you contact similar (but non-competing) companies who currently have sites that you may want to emulate.  You might also try joining a local/regional small business network.  These can often provide a wealth of advice and contacts.

Be up-front with whomever you contract with.  Let them know that you ultimately would like to be  largely self-sufficient.  If you're fortunate, you may find a developer that is willing to coach you as well as do the development.

With regard to security, you need to ask yourself if you can afford to A) come up to speed on current security practices and threats and more importantly, B) invest time on-going to stay abreast of latest developments and risks.

Ultimately, I would suggest you are probably further ahead to find a reputable service provider and then assess the amount of time your business allows you to focus on aspects that aren't central to your business.

I would modify that slightly...contract with a developer if you want to build something from the ground up.  If you just want to get online and start selling a product, you can do it yourself with no technical knowledge by using one of the many templated providers. SquareSpace is a good example of this:

Simple process, relatively low monthly fees, they worry about the technical details.

Echoing what the others say: if you don't have any experience building for the web, this is not the time nor place to start learning.

Thanks everyone for your advices..
Rather than thinking and enquiring about the platforms and other technical stuff its better to make a start. So I have started learning about databases..Being a technical person and I work in a software company and my domain is Windows and SCCM Administration, I have a little knowledge but to enhance my skills and to start my business idea i am now worried about the look and feel of my website.

Once I get little familiar with databases and programming languages I would definitely going to catch hold of a developer.

Just to build a website we can simply make use of wordpress and create a site. But the business idea i have has to build from the ground just like the we finish the graduation and pass with a distinction. People here may not agree with my point but I have to figure out a way to build my business idea.

Sirs, experts exchange is my friend, guide and philosopher since 5 years. I have a hope that I will get help :)

Please suggest a front end platform for the design.

Thanks,
Venkat
