HP Smart Array 642 Controller Stopped Working

HP Proliant DL380 G5 with Windows 2008 R2 and OS on Smart Array P400.
I also have an HP Smart Array 642 controller that was working connecting by Ultra SCSI 320 to my HP MSA20 with two RAID 5 volumes. Thought I would be smart and update the driver. Now the Device manager shows yellow exclamation mark. I first tried loading last known good configuration and the tried rolling back the driver, neither worked.
The device cannot start (code 10). I found KB943104 in reference to the code 10 which had a FixIt. However since the server is Windows 2008 R2 the fixit does not pop up, so I looked at the manual fix which says to click on the Upper Filters and delete. There were none in the registry. In registry key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E97B-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
If I use the Softpaq SP41765 I simply get “Raid Controller” Driver Version 6.12.6.65, but no connection to hard drives. If I use Softpaq SP59746 it shows up as Driver Version 6.6.0.64 and I get the Code 10.
Neither driver shows up in Array Configuration utility.
However the 642 shows up when rebooting connecting to two disks.
To switch back to the RAID Controller version I have to uninstall and delete drives which causes a unexpected error and a reboot.
Is this controller broken, or is there a fix?
These are the initial parts of the errors I found in the event viewer after updating the driver:

I posted in the HP DL Server forum, but got no responses.  So am posting here in the hopes an answer is available.
I have also ordered another HP smart array 642 controller

Do you have another Server that you can insert the card into and put the driver that worked prior.
The RAID setting is in the card  so you might be able to see the Volumes on the other server.

Just don't initialize anything or delete any RAID config and you should be fine to test this method.

yo_bee,
Sorry I do not.  I set this server up specifically so I could still use my Ultra SCSI 320 HP MSA20.  I have two that are used for disk2disk backup.  The 642 required a riser card and that only works in the DL380.
I really need to spend the dollars to move to a SAS array, but probably not in this years budget.
My BackupExec 2014 is on a new DL360 G8 with Windows 2012 and SCSI has been dropped, sad to say.  This was meant to replace my DPM 2007 backup system (W2K3 32-bit) but failing to get it going so far.  :(
The fact that it reboot when i do a rollback of the driver is very disturbing.
I am going to do some research on the events i found today.  Spending way too much time on this issue though.
I was thinking about removing the card and rebooting, then put it back.
Also thought I might run CC cleaner to see if it would remove bad registry items.
Any other thoughts?

All sound like good steps.
I am assuming that the Vol's have data on them or can they be blown away and start over?

We’d all like to think our company’s data is well protected, but when you ask IT professionals they admit the data probably is not as safe as it could be.

They have data, but at this point it is only testing.  DPM is still main backup until I get this worked out.
going through the events listed above it s looking like something HP was installed that is blocking.  I may uninstall all HP programs and reboot to see what happens.
I uninstalled all HP programs rebooted and cleared registry with CC Cleaner and rebooted again.  No success.

I replaced the Smart Array 642 Controller with a refurbished controller.
After many attempts to get it going (reboots, reseats etc) it finally worked

No response with any other suggestions so i ordered a different controller and after a battle it is up and running.
Not positive the other one was bad, but it is going in recycle bin anyway.
