"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

HI Sam,

Are you familiar with Oracle, SQL Server, MySQL, or any other database engine?

If so, you'll find that DB2 SQL is very similar.  The biggest 3 differences are:

- Concatenation is with the double pipe (||) not plus (+) as SQL Server does.
- The SQL syntax for date handling is a lot friendlier in DB2.
- The UPDATE statement, particularly for complex (join) queries is not intuitive.

What version are you running?  Below is the link to the LUW version 9 online documentation. There are similar links for all of the versions.

Good Luck!

You don't state what "flavor" of DB2 you're using, but if you're using DB2 for i (a.k.a. AS/400 or iSeries), then this redbook is a good start:
