I wear a lot of hats...

"The solutions and answers provided on Experts Exchange have been extremely helpful to me over the last few years. I wear a lot of hats - Developer, Database Administrator, Help Desk, etc., so I know a lot of things but not a lot about one thing. Experts Exchange gives me answers from people who do know a lot about one thing, in a easy to use platform." -Todd S.

You've probably disabled speaker playback just on this machine (it's a "feature" of Windows 8). This Microsoft Support page  will help you through the stages of Windows Sound Troubleshooter to fix the issue.

are this external speakers - and a pc - or laptop?
anyway, check these out :
See if  my sound procedure checklist helps :
-check if the device is enabled in the bios
-in device manager, check if the card is installed without errors
Install your latest drivers, and reboot to complete the install......
-in the audio and sound applet>audio tab check if the sound card is selected
-in the volume section, check if the sound is turned up enough, and NOT muted
-in the audio and sound applet>sounds tab select the start windows sound, and check if you can play it
-check if the speakers are connected to the proper sound output (green)
-test the speakers on another PC

The speakers are working but I use to be able to control volume from speakers manually.  Now only thru the sound icon on my Windows 8 system. What shows up now in the volume icon when you open the mixer is the "device" (external speakers), Application(System sounds) and Browser icon for volume. I just trying to figure out why the sound control on the external speakers is no longer functional. Thanks

"I use to be able to control volume from speakers manually"

- from a control on the speakers (separate from Windows eg "volume knob") or something like a keyboard "hot key" (connecting to Windows via some form of driver)?
