What type of server is this?  This could be due to drivers and in case like that, you should download ESXi from the server vendor.  As an example, if you have an IBM x-Series server then you could download it from IBM at http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/x/os/vmware/

i would also check the iso to make sure it isn't corrupt; compare the MD5

You have downloaded the roll up iso.

Wrong one I'm afraid.

Go back to VMware site or Vendor site and download the correct I so.

The filename you need to download is called something like

VMware-VMvisor-installer......build and version number.

I think the issue is most download the first in the list which is the roll up.I so

Which is wrong and for upgrades!

If i have not installed drivers for the on board network card, will the installation stop or give any issues/error messages?

Correct, your servers needs to be on the HCL, and if using vendor hardware, e.g. IBM, HP, DELL, you should use the OEM ESXi version download form vendors site.

ESXi is notoriously fragile when running on hardware or configurations not on the Hardware Compatibility List and few people have the patience or expertise to solve the odd misbehaviors encountered on a setup with multiple unknown compatibility issues.

Server vendors can afford to have some engineers work on specialized editions of ESXi that have the right patches and drivers to run on their products.

If you've put together the server yourself, without carefully choosing components listed on the HCL, you may be stuck.

But if you want to solve the problem the hard way, I would start by 1) following the above suggestion to get a download of an installation DVD that's not labeled as a patch rollup and make sure the checksum matches 2) make sure you can successfully run some other operating system - probably Linux - to verify that the hardware doesn't have any compatibility problems with itself, and 3) pull out as many peripheral cards as you can - ESXi can install to a USB flash drive; you can make sure ESXi runs on the basic hardware before tackling network cards, RAID cards, etc.

I suppose you could try the free version of Windows 2008 R2 Hyper-V as another way to check out your hardware.
