Active Directory question

If my Active Directory DC's are 2008 R2, can I add a server that has 2008 R2 Sp1 as a domain controller?  Would I have to update the rest of the DC's to SP1 if I joined this server that is 2008 R2 SP1.

Yes you can add a DC that is 2008 R2 SP1

This is not required for things to work but I would be good to have all of your DC's on the same SP version.

The only thing that is a requirement when it comes to OS types with domain controllers is when your forest/domain functional level it set to a specific level.

Meaning if you have a 2008R2 Forest/domain functional level, you cannot add any other DC's into the environment that are lower than this OS version. they would need to be 2008R2 or higher.

As Will said you can add your Win2008 R2 SP1 server as a domain controller in your current environment without any issues the forest/domain functional level is the most important note..
