Disable Compiz or similar desktop Compostion tool. What is the GUI you are using? I suggest something light, like XFCE. Something you can also check is whether you are using the nouveau driver, or NVidia's Legacy drivers. Besides that, if this is a laptop, it is possible that it has a hybrid video system (Many laptops come with a combination of an NVidia GPU and an Intel GPU, and if you don't need the more powerful NVidia one you can switch to the less powerful intel GPU to save power). So you can try switching over to the other GPU...
