I need to create a donut (for example) in Adobe Illustrator CC 2014, without whiting out the center (hole).

How do you create a donut (for example) in Adobe Illustrator CC 2014, without whiting out the center (hole).  The way I did it; I created a large circle with “fill” and for the inner circle I had to “fill” with white to cover up the fill of the outer circle. The problem is that I want a transparent background for the web.  Thank you for any help.  Joe
